Pull the draw strings loosely shut but do not tie the drawstrings on the garbage bag. Blow up smaller balloons and add these to the bag as well (or add the ball pit balls if using these instead). Stuff the paper and tissue paper into the garbage bag. Repeat ripping with the tissue paper as well. The more pieces you use the bigger the confetti drop (and the bigger the clean-up).

Repeat this with as many colors and pieces of construction paper as desired (I used 8 pieces).

While it didn’t last long it was a loved activity and we proceeded to have to pick up and repeat the drop over and over. The littles shouted “Happy New Year!” and danced around in the confetti. We counted down and let our confetti ball drop open over the balcony. We put the PBS kids New Year’s Countdown on youtube. Then when it was close to Noon on the 31st we put on our hats and got ready for the countdown. We created the following “New Year’s” headbands and confetti ball drop together. We started our party in the late morning with all our favorite snacks and special “bubble juice (sparkling grape juice).” Then my mini and I started crafting. Since the minis stick to a pretty solid bedtime we didn’t want them staying up until midnight (nor did we think we were able to stay up that late). I have provided them for you as a free download if you are interested. I took some mini party sacks that I picked up from Hobby Lobby and glued some tags with clock faces on them. The concept behind these Countdown Activity Bags is fairly simple. We play games all night and just enjoy ringing in the New Year in each other’s company. We usually have a low key party with the family and their cousins. I loved the whole concept behind the activity bags and thought it would be a great way to keep the evening fun. I didn’t have time to implement them into our New Year’s Eve Party for 2011 but wanted to make sure that I made some for this year’s party.
